HISTORY

In 1836 Marshall County was formed by a legislative act from portions of Lincoln, Bedford and Maury counties.  Sometime before this, the little log church at Carmel was torn down and moved to the village of Lewisburg.  It was erected on the corner of what is present day Church Street and 4th Ave. The recorded deed is in Bedford County.  Services in the church were held infrequently since it took the circuit rider four or five weeks to make his rounds.

About 1877, another church was erected on the same site, a white clapboard building with a steeple and a bell.  W.T. Gill, a beloved circuit rider, founded 13 Methodist missions throughout Lincoln and Marshall counties.  These were united into five, three of which were Lewisburg, Cornersville and Gill's Chapel. All three belonged to the same circuit with the parsonage at Cornersville since there was no parsonage at Lewisburg.  Later, probably in 1903, a home adjoining the church was purchased for a parsonage.

The present church building, built and completed in 1899, was something of which to be proud. With a very small amount of money on hand, the church was dedicated in 1899. Thus, the church had grown from the log church moved from Mt. Carmel to Lewisburg, to the white clapboard church, to a brick building. It had grown from a membership of 25 in two years to a membership of 75 and by 1930 to a membership of 400.
